#PROTECTION# WATERMARK

Hello! I have a question about the size of the images that the site uses as previews.

I don't understand why you should publish a huge photo: anyone can keep it for themselves and use it for their own purposes - print it and so on.

In photo stocks, the buyer sees a small preview image, and if he wants to study it in more detail, he sees an enlarged protected image (watermarks).

I put a mark that I want to protect my photos, but I didn't see any changes.

Hi Alena,

you don't need to add a watermark on your images.

Go to your profile, choose SETTINGS and then mark the checkbox APPEND MY NAME ON ALL MY PHOTOS (COPYRIGHT PROTECTION)

Example (see attached image of my settings, third of the blue marked checkboxes).

It can take up to 24 hours until the change will be visible.

Kind Regards, Hans-Martin

Dear Alena,

Additionally to Hans-Martins explanation on putting a copyright sign on your photos I must stress that right click downloading of a photo is disabled. The only way to copy a photo from the site is taking a screen grab. But this will give you a result which is not suitable for printing.

I agree that the photos are too big for viewing on a monitor. (for example the first photo in a profile). This has been notified to the developpers and I hope it will be corrected.

Dear Hans-Martin, thank you! I did it more than a day ago, but nothing happened. What should the protection look like?

To be frank, the little signature down left can be removed in a few seconds, or simple cropped off.

If I go to my photo: https://1x.com/photo/2088593

I can pull the photo on a new tab.

There I see the original sized preview  is stored in https://seuppcdn01.1x.com/images/user/f2b7d48be5351b7388c0e7582ff44c61-hd4.jpg

And I can download/save a 2499 x 1892 pixel version.

Colours need to be recovered a bit, but that resolution is probably good enough for a medium size print of 10 inch width.

It should not be possible to pull the photo to an extra tab in Chrome in my opinion, too simple to find a medium-res version of the JPEG.

This wasn't possible in Classic 1x!!!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,  thank-you for bringing this up and I'm not really happy to know that this could be done so easily. This is major. Yes, I could easily enhance that photo and it looks pretty good. Without any enhancements, I downloaded yours to test what you say... this should not be a possibily and needs to be fixed

Hi Mike, hi Joe,

agree with you. But, to be honest, image theft cannot be completely prevented.

I saw that your image has a copyright notice.

That's fine.

In the magazine you can find an article about this kind of protection:

https://1x.com/magazine/permalink/8194

There was another discussion about that topic some years ago but I don't know where to search.

But, even if the best copy prevention strategies are implemented, a screenshot can be taken to produce a print of remarkable size.

Cheers, Hans-Martin

A screenshot only captures the (scaled) display of a browser window, including the colour management the browser does. Getting to the JPEG displayed is more serious, Hans-Martin. And as 1x classic shows, it can be prevented to a certain degree. If somebody really wants the JPEG, they will get there in any case. But the fact you can drag the photo to an extra tab makes it too simple...

Best regards,

Mike

I agree with Mike, it is way too easy to get a decent quality photo from our galleries...and not at all comparable to a screen shot I agree. It is a problem that should be looked into to see if a fix can be found.

To stay fair, if somebody really wants to have the JPEG, a bit of engineering allows the same thing in Classic 1x.

If you have a look at the page source code, you can find the link to the square preview, for example in this one:

https://gallery.1x.com/photo/2100063/all:user:248636

You can easily find:

https://seuppcdn01.1x.com/images/user/f3d3e6fbfbbee29cc7a47858efb3e043-sq.jpg

If you then replace the last file name by the piece of code pointing to the displayed image found in here:

<img src="/images/system/toolbar_load.gif" style="display: none;" ="setupBasics('2100063','1500','1001','248636','','','f3d3e6fbfbbee29cc7a47858efb3e043','/images/user/f3d3e6fbfbbee29cc7a47858efb3e043-hd4.jpg','/images/user/f3d3e6fbfbbee29cc7a47858efb3e043-sd2.jpg');">

You can do the same thing in classic, download a medium res JPG without signature, btw.

https://seuppcdn01.1x.com/images/user/f3d3e6fbfbbee29cc7a47858efb3e043-hd4.jpg

It's just a bit harder to do.

regards,

Mike

Ok good to know Mike. Also, I have been testing things, on Gamma with my Iphone I can touch the screen / my photo (or any photo in the published gallery) and I can save it on my IPhone photo album. When I did same with Classic, I can't, does not give me option ' save to photo album'. The photo highlights in blue.

The consequences of this is something to look into.

For example: many of my photos that I upload to my Instagram are done this way. I get them from my photo album on my IPhone as the source and add them to my IG post. I did this often with photos from my Facebook page, saved them on my phone and then posted on IG.

Which of course means, if 'John Doe photography' wants to open a new account on IG and use any photos John Doe sees on the Gamma gallery he can, just touch photo, save to phone and post. Yes indeed this rarely happens (but image theft happens as we all know).

Therefore, my test reveals it is possible now on GAMMA to download our photos with a smart phone but this cannot be done on CLASSIC.
That means a lot of time using google reverse image search etc to see if our photos have been used by others IF this issue is not resolved. I hope they will look into this.

In Settings there is an autoamtic copyright protection feature you can turn on which will activate a big 1x watermark in the top right corner as well as the photographers name in the bottom left. It's impossible to download print files from the web on 1x, which means that the quality will be much much worse when printed from the web compared to using the real print files. Adding some extra protection, preventing drag and drop is in our development pipeline.

Return of the 1 X watermark  ... a very good idea.

I agree with your last statemetn.  If a person does not want their photos stolen, do not put them on the internet.  Even small sized photos can be enlarged with Gigapixel.

We will add a patch tomorrow that will prevent drag and drop of images.

However, as Ralf Stelander stated, it is not possible to make high quality prints of any file publically available on our webservers. Also, this is not an issue that is unique to 1x. Images are unfortunately always easy to download for anyone with skill with computers regardless what protections we put in place - if it isn't available on our servers for public download it is not possible to show them on the site. With modern smartphones and computer screens getting higher and higher resolution, we cannot limit the resolution too much as it would cause images to look blurry on modern devices and reduce the browsing experience.

Enabling the copyright banner will increase security of your files but ultimately, the resolution simply isn't enough for high quality print regardless.

Best regards

Jacob

Good news, drag and drop and right click to save protection is now live. I would also recommend activating the ´watermark and embedded copyright in Settings for extra protection if you are worried about this.

Thanks for noitfying us, Ralf.

I can't find an option for a watermark in settings. The only available option is this one:

Append my name on all my photos (copyright protection)

And that one only puts my (tiny displayed) name in the left corner.

Is the option you named work in progress?

Mike

I suppose the "Append my name ... " tag will also generate the 1X logo.

As it is now, the function works only for new uploaded photos.

That is something that needs to be adressed.
