Hi everybody!

This is an image I have sent to curation and it was not selected. I would really much like to have some feedback as to why that might be and how I can improve it. Also, when we repost a picture for curation, can we keep the same title?

Thank you!

Technical info : Shot with a Lumix G9, Leica lens 8-18mm; SS: 1/400 f/11  ISO 200

Lucie hi and welcome to " The Real Critique " - yes you can use the same title - Looking it lacks good light and power to please the many inmy view. - I have downloaded your image back into Photoshop just to see up close. - this is what I had a play with. - Camera RAW - Clarity +15 - Dehaze +45 - - Nik tools Tonal Contrast - I finishe with the dodge tool with Opacity set at 20% and worked on the wall to try and bring out that wonderful texture... thank you for sharing..

Hello, Lucie Gagnon

Welcome back to our forum. I like your image as it is. However, if it did not work well as it is in curation, then we might as well think of something else to re-present it to the curators. I guess that the curators might have looked for some plus details or attractions in the image that would put it amongst eye catching published/ awarded landscapes. It would be appropriate to add here that Landscape is a really hard category on 1x. As said several times on different occassions to fellow photographers, the competition in Landscape is quite thight. What I did in reediting your image was to add some blur to the landscape. I kept the castle in focus. Then I also added some light contrast to it. What else could be done would have been adding an object of interest like a bird or maybe a person but that would have been both difficult and unrealistic to your image. What I think in addition to my proposal is that landscape images of eye catching quality are foremost produced in camera. It is not that I criticize your image as bad but that it could have more to it. You could also try re-editing it from scratch. The sky and the land below could be let more natural. It might be of the screenshot I took but I see fluctuations of color in the sky. Some parts look more desaturated than others and the green of the land below looks also desaturated and not very natural. I wish you good light. Cicek Kiral SC....

Thank you very much Daniel for taking the time to critique my picture and offer suggestions. I don't have Camera Raw, so I don't have an option for Dehazing. I work with Photoshop Elements 21 and DXO Photolab and Nik Collection. BTW, i work with RAW files. I like what you did with the sky, but it was an overcast day and there was no blue in the sky, So it seems to me that it takes away from the atmosphere of the day, in my mind. But overall, I like the dynamic range that your changes created.  Thanks again for your help.

p.s.  I just found out that I do have a dehazing option in PSE 21 so thanks to you I found it!!! :-)

Hello Cicek. Thank you very much for your critique and suggestions. You are right that the competition in Landscape is fierce,  but it seemed to be the most appropriate category for this picture. Furthermore , most people vote without knowing what category a picture is in. As for the colours in the sky, they are natural. It was a overcast, cold March day.  I personnally don't like in this image the blurred background.  But I appreciate nonetheless your efforts and time in making some suggestions. Thank you!

I looked at this from a light point of view to help direct the eye in your negative space and contrast/haze reduction in clouds, and finally adding some warmth in the light parts.  3 seperate layers in Capture 1, using magic brush to select the three areas to work.  Now the eye has what it needs and your image has more emotion into it.  The tecture parts are still preserved, but noise level reduced.  Hope you see is also.  Only took 5 minutes.  Bruce Wendler the Vibro1.

Hello Lucie,

thank you for uploading your photo to this forum. I offer you my look at your picture.

The frame is interestingly composed, the stairs seem to lead us to heaven. The clouds themselves, unfortunately, are overexposed in some parts and unfortunately it is not possible to recover details in the overexposed parts of the image.

I edited in PSCC 2023 and Camera Raw. For me the picture is a bit too colorful so I added luminisites. In addition, I tried to reduce the overexposure of the sky using a mask in Camera Raw for the sky. Unfortunately, not all treatments gave the expected result. In addition, I added a bit of contrast and slightly denoised the upper part of the image.

Of course, this is my vision of your photo.

Kind regards
